Getting Back To Local

So, a little over a year ago now… Almost a year and a half ago, actually, I started up a little project I called the Limestone New Media Group. When I got it started, I was about the only guy in town on Twitter but I’d heard a few other people were listening to podcasts. I figured that 3 or 4 people had to only be the tip of the iceburg, and that we should probably all get together for a beer, coffee or lunch. While it did take a few months more before anything other than a 1-on-1 meetup happened, they did eventually happen. And they happened regularly… For a while.

The past few months, though, have seen a real steep decline in the “real-world” gatherings of local people… And that saddens me. The local meetups were something that brought together three things I enjoy: Kingston, the web and meeting people. The meetups, from day one, were always planned to be social, for-fun gatherings and I think most people who attended had a good time. So a few friends of mine, and I, are going to start to get them going again.

I regularly say that one of the things I find most rewarding in this new digital web media space is building connections between two people. Watching partnerships, ideas, friendships and even relationships bloom as a result of a simple introduction tweet, email or phone call is a lot of fun. It’s even more fun when you can do that on a larger scale. So a few weeks ago I created the @limestonetweets account. It’s serving, right now, as a directory of local Twitterers, but will likely be used for announcements and such as time goes on. It’s my hope that it will help unite more people and build some connections between folks with similar interests.

But back to the meetups. I mentioned we’re getting them going again, and we are: The firs local meetup/tweetup/gathering will be helpd tomorrow, February 9th, at 7:00pm, at The Merchant Taphouse. This keeps it on it’s original schedule of the second monday of the month, and at our regular location. Come out for dinner, come out for drinks, or come out just to say hello! We’ll be there. I’ll be in a bright shirt, and the sig with the LNMG logo will be on the table. (We’re usually in and around to the left). If you can, give me an RSVP (here, twitter, email, wherever) so that I can hold a big enough table.

See you tomorrow!

Introducing: The Limestone New Media Group

So, last night the handful of us new media guys in town got together at The Merchant Taphouse to hang out and talk new media over a few drinks and some wings. We’ve now establish a name, a domain is forthcoming, and a frequency. We got a lot of work done too on where we want to go with the local new media stuff, too. More details on that will be established as we go forward – but the wheels are in motion for some exciting things in Kingston.

Thanks to David Bailey and birthday boy Francis Wooby for making the trek downtown to be a part of last night’s meetup.

Want to join us for the next one? It will be held on the second Monday of December (That’s the 11th) and will be held once again at the Merchant Taphouse once again at 7:00pm. Are you coming?

Kingston’s Second New Media Meetup Is A Go!

So it’s been over a month already since the last new media meetup happened in Kingston – and while additional details will be ironed out over the next few days, I’m ready to announce the date, time and location now.

Kingston’s SECOND new media meetup will be held:
When: Monday, November 12th, 2007, 7pm – 9:30pm (Or later as things happen)
Where: The Merchant Taphouse, 6A Princess St, Kingston. Located beside the Holiday Inn. [link]

I’ve got a handful of smaller things to work out, so you can expect more details on this likely on Tuesday… But if you’re in the area, mark your calendars now. See you then!

Kingston’s first meetup – Small, but wonderful

So this past Monday I made my way down to the Kingston Brewing Company for Kingston’s first local new media meetup!

Originally I sent emails to 3 people and posted it here and on Twitter. It looked for the longest time that all 3 invitees were attending… But life happened and the meetup consisted of Francis and I hanging out and talking. Was great to get to know another new media type in town. I’ve only got one left to my knowledge

Some stats of the night:

  • We switched tables no less then three times.
  • 3 add-ons joined us, all awesome people… None in the new media space. Meant for even more fun. :)
  • 1 pizza and 1 poutine were consumed.
  • 2 meals (Before the post-drink snacks) were eaten

Overall, the night was a great success. I’m working on the next one. Tentative date is October 22nd. Feedback and ideas wecome and encouraged.

Kingston’s First New Media Meetup: Sept 24th, 7:00pm

So shortly after this morning’s post I sent an email to the local new media folk I know, and am now making details available publicly.

Kingston, home to the Podcasters Across Borders conference, is long overdue for a smaller-scale meetup. And that’s changing on September 24th. I’m going to be at the Kingston Brewing Company (34 Clarance St) from 7:00 until at least 8:00 that night, wearing the bright shirt visible in the sidebar of my blog. I’d love to get a handful (or more) local folk who are interested, or knowledgable, in this new media space together to form some connections between us and begin building the local conversation.

Francis Wooby has already commented that he’s going to attempt to make it, and i’m hoping he can bring tales of Podcamp Philly.

So come down, bring your business cards, ideas, stories and some friends if they’re interested and participate in the first of what will hopefully become regular events in Kingston!

[RSVPs not required, comments welcome]

Going Local At Last

So I have never hidden the fact that I’m from Kingston, Ontario. Been here all my life, in fact. And while I adore Toronto, and love Ottawa… I’m likely going to stick around Kingston for quite some time. Now, Kingston’s not a small town, we’re up around 115,000 according to the last census, but we’re not overly huge, either.

When I found out about PAB 06, in July of that year, I couldn’t believe I had missed the event. Worse yet, I don’t believe there was even a Kingstonian present (Someone correct me on this? Was Don Edwards there last year? Someone else?). I was floored. An event like PAB 06, happened in Kingston, and nobody, at least that I could tell, local there.

I, amongst others, fixed that this time around, but I’ve felt very … lonely in social media since then. Being that I don’t drive, it’s hard to get together at the various meetups or geek dinners in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto or London… I have mastered playing the at home game though and made the trip down to the Podcamp that took place in Pittsburgh in August

For the longest time, searches for new media folk in Kingston returned one person – me. Then I found (and met) Don. And then I learned of Francis Wooby. And now David Bailey (Who was, go figure, at PAB 07 too).

I think it’s finally time that I reach out locally and work to bridge connections between us. Kingston may be small on a world scale, sure, and I’m sure some folk fear competition locally, but there’s no reason we can’t all get along. After all, we’re working in the social media space.

Folks in Kingston’s new media space – expect emails soon. And put forward the word… Kingston’s first new media meetup is in the works.
